Grey Bruce Native Seed Bank
The Grey Bruce Native Seed Bank was founded as a nonprofit in 2023 and exists to provide a seed bank composed of local, sustainably collected source-identified and truly-wild adapted seed from Grey and Bruce Counties.
‘By producing scaled-up quantities of seed from within 150 km, the bank can supply stock for large local restoration projects, such as roadsides, gravel pits, conservation authority lands or private acreage.
Restoration begins with our relationship to the land, to each other, and to the seeds that sustain ecosystems.
As the GBNSB grows, we are committed to initiatives that contribute to truth and reconciliation in the traditional territories of the Haudenosaunee, Ojibway/Chippewa, and Anishinabek peoples, recognizing that caring for the land is a shared responsibility.
Volunteers lovingly foster native seeds through collaborative events…
including seed collection from wild stock,
seed sorting,
seed cold stratification (artificially in the fridge, or naturally iin seed trays or by direct sowing),
transplanting at the Pinnacle Rock seed orchard in Duncan or the Ontario Flora seed orchard near Markdale,
and finally harvesting the seeds and putting them in packets.
